Modern landfills are highly engineered containment systems, designed to minimize the impact of solid waste (refuse, trash, and garbage) on the environment and human health. In modern landfills, the waste is contained by a liner system. The primary purpose of the liner system is to isolate the landfill contents from the environment and, therefore, to protect the soil and groundwater from pollution originating in the landfill.
Sewage Lagoon Applications
Virtually every community faces the challenge of containing and treating its wastewater to prevent seepage into our groundwater supplies. Control of seepage was a primary reason for the installation of containment lining systems. The success of your project relies not only on the integrity of the geomembrane itself, but on the skill and the workmanship of the installation crew.
Storm Water Pond Applications
Stormwater collection ponds are utilized to contain rainwater that has run off of commercial, industrial and residential areas. Much of this water is contaminated with oil, pesticides and other pollutants, which must be contained.
Project Analysis — Trionyx
Through a combined effort between the State of New Mexico and several organizations DGI became an instrumental player in providing our client contaminated water containment basins up to 5 acres in size. The key to the earthen containments was a multi layered geosynthetic liner system with an integrated leak detection system. Following strict engineering guidelines by the State of New Mexico, DGI was able to install this multi layer liner solution for the storage of up to 15 million gallons of contaminated water in each basin. The solution involved a base layer of high quality geotextile which was installed and then covered with the secondary containment layer of geomembrane. This layer of geomembrane was then covered with a layer of bi-planer geonet to facilitate the movement of any released fluids into an integrated leak detection system with multiple access points on the top of the basin walls. DGI then installed a primary liner of HDPE to exact manufacturers and industry specifications. To ensure these standards were met or exceeded DGI provided an in-house certified and licensed Qa/QC professional and the primary client provided a 3rd party licensed QA/QC professionals. The two groups worked together along with DGI team members to provide the highest quality liner solution available. The system has performed flawlessly to date with no leaks and has become a model of success for the storage of contaminated water. This system will allow this valuable resource to then be recycled and used again. This project has been instrumental in saving millions of gallons of freshwater from being pulled from the aquifers in this region. The program has been so successful that DGI has completed an additional 5 recycle basins of similar size in this region. We take great pride in knowing that DGI played an important part in the conservation of one of our most valuable resources….water.
